Z-Lite Glacier pendant in a kitchen

How High to Hang Pendant Lights Over a Kitchen Island

Quick answer: hang kitchen island pendants so the bottom of each one is 30 to 36 inches above the countertop, and space them 24 to 30 inches apart, measured centre to centre.

How high to hang them

  • 30 to 36 inches above the countertop works for standard 8 to 9 foot ceilings.
  • With a higher ceiling, go toward the top of that range, or choose a pendant with longer rods or cord.
  • Measure from the countertop to the bottom of the pendant.

How far apart

  • Space pendants 24 to 30 inches apart, centre to centre.
  • Keep the outer pendants at least 6 to 12 inches in from the ends of the island.
  • Let the group of pendants cover about two-thirds of the island's length.

How many pendants?

Take two-thirds of your island's length. That's the space your pendants should cover. Then fit pendants 24 to 30 inches apart inside it. For example, an 8-foot (96-inch) island gives you about 64 inches, so three 12-inch pendants spaced about 26 inches apart fit well. Shorter islands often look best with two pendants.

What size pendant?

  • Most island pendants are 12 to 18 inches wide.
  • Prefer one fixture? A linear chandelier lights the whole island evenly. Choose one about a foot shorter than the island.

Before you buy

  • Check the cord or rod length on the product page so the pendant reaches the height you want.
  • If your ceiling is sloped, look for "sloped ceiling compatible" in the technical details.
  • Dimmable pendants let you switch between bright task light and a softer glow. Your bulbs and dimmer switch need to be dimmable too.
